Journaling is such a popular growth tool and money journaling is increasingly becoming the leader for journaling practices.
Even my niece, who thinks she invented all the cool things she does, journals and it’s one thing she doesn’t chuckle at that I do!

It is as close to universally understood as a great tool to have in your corner. Of course there are several different types of journaling and today I am taking a close look at money journaling.
As things get more ‘norm’ sometimes they get watered down as everyone wants to say they do it, but one thing that has always fascinated me about growth is what makes it ‘work’ and what makes it doesn’t work.
And, this is where this list comes in…
9 Money Journaling Mistakes…
In no particular order, here is why your money journaling is continue to hold you back from journaling:
- An Absence of Money Journaling Prompts – and the right money journaling prompts. Too much freehand journaling when you are trying to move to a different level of money manifestation can just keep you busy for the sake of busy, but really you are standing on the same spot.
- Lack of Consistency – so many do money journaling, or any kind of journaling, as an emergency thing when the money chips are down. And use it as a fix; a one off; a oh I need something, instead of creating a practice to move them through energy they want to change.
- Similarly, there is a Lack of Discipline – people start and give up, forget, convince themselves they don’t need it. People don’t tend to, well no-one I know does, do that with brushing their teeth and yet, with most things that are about personal and spiritual growth the drama is I can’t!
- Overcomplicating the Process – I am a big fan of one money journaling prompt a day. Give yourself too much and you have set yourself up to not do it.
- Making it all Look Pretty – the journey of money journaling isn’t about painting a picture or writing a please please please (like a Dear Santa letter) to the Universe. It is about shifting your energy and sometimes, that can feel challenging as the layers of illusions, stories and fears peel away. But if it is all, I am so ready, so ready, so ready and the money flow you desire to manifest isn’t coming in, then is painting a: it’s all rosy picture going to shift your energy? Unfortunately, highly unlikely too.
- Lack of Patience – Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither are healthy financial habits. It’s important to be patient with yourself and your money journaling practice, understanding that progress sometimes just takes time.
- Not Seeking Help When Needed – if you’re struggling with certain aspects of your money journaling practice, don’t hesitate to seek guidance.
- Failure to Adjust – money journaling is a growth tool and as your financial situation evolves, your money journaling practice needs to evolve too, or else it may become irrelevant and ineffective.
- You’re afraid of what you’ll find. Some people are afraid to even start money journaling because they’re afraid of what they’ll find. So here’s the truth on that, there is no reason you will find anything to confirm why you will never bust your current financial ceiling. That is a fear that you need and can resolve!
- Don’t have a separate money journal – having ‘mixed’ journals can sometimes mean your shopping list is next to your money journaling and that muddies the energy. Get organised for magic, and keep your journals topic specific!
