Sarupa invited me to share my 10 tips for a business mindset as part of her selling with success, authenticity and soul series. We are doing some work together and want to bring the spiritual (what she does brilliantly) and material and business (what I do brilliantly) together so you can cut through what holds you back in business.

Business and selling what you do are not the domain of men or masculine energy and what I am sharing below are important mindset pieces for anyone who wants to improve the way that they do and think business.
Are you ready to change your business mindset?
Being in business is a fabulous challenge and adventure. There will always be peaks and valleys, but valleys are not full of despair and pain, just points of learning and places to move through quickly.
Part of the issues people face is they look at business as chore, or something that is beyond them or too corporate. It is as if business doesn’t fit them. This results in feeling that the world can be working against them. Truth is if you want to be successful in business, you canโt hide from business.
Getting you into the right frame of mind is about thinking yourself out of any negatives as well as illusion. This means changing your mindset to think better, work better and have fun and successย in your business.
Make a difference to the way you view and feel about your business by following these tips.
- Mind your own business โ you ARE your business so make sure every facet is visible to you and under your control.
- Play the game โ Sales is a game and like any game it can be challenging, but the rewards and feeling of worth when you win make it all worthwhile.
- Put yourself in your customerโs shoes โ Think about what they want. Ask them what they want. Then you will be able to serve them better.
- Make a plan โ Journeys begin with a planned destination, so should your business have a place to go if itโs going to go places.
- Sales is a service โ You are serving people when you sell. You truly believe your product or service will help them.
- Look around โ Stop to think about how you can develop to attract more customers.
- Know when to quit โ It is not a bad thing to walk away from potential clients if the service you offer is not for them.
- Target the right customers โ Are the people you are pursuing right for you?
- Keep it together โ Organise your marketing list, matching individuals to the right product or โparkingโ them until you create a service or product that fits them.
- Keep scoring โ Set yourself a goal for every working day of the week and meet it.
Using these tips should invigorate how you work on a day to day basis. Looking at your business honestly and transparently and by adding a little fun to the challenge will help you realise your full business potential.
Do these tips look like they will work for you? Would you add any more to the list?

Love the idea of sales being a service! All too often we get wrapped up in the no, the denial, the rejection and flipping things around to working out who you can serve, why it makes it a whole lot less painful!
Sarah, This is something people miss a lot of the time…Sales IS a service, it should make you and your clients feel fantastic! ๐
Thank you for the excellent advice. The aspect I find the hardest is setting a goal for each day and sticking to it. I am trying not to get involved with too many things as I was overextending myself. This is is helping and I am becoming more organized now.
Sue, I’m so glad this article helped you. It’s important to set goals in your business. Not only for your own motivation, but it is a great time management tool as well.
Well said. I agree with each of points but the one that resonates with me most is “Make a Plan” because everything else flows from that. For over a decade I worked with new entrepreneurs and there was nothing that would send chills down my spine faster than someone telling me they didn’t need to waste time creating a plan because they just wanted to “give it a try.”
Marquita, I know it’s so true. It’s as if people haven’t heard the old adage “fail to plan and you plan to fail”!
In working with clients the part many struggle with is targeting the right customers – So many small business owners starting out feel that if they exclude anyone that they’ll be cutting off a “value source of income” while it’s the opposite that is true. Spend time understanding who your ideal customer is, figure out what they want, and then focus, focus, focus – You’ll end up with only the clients you really want. – and that’s a real gift!
Marty, Spot on! Once you have focused on the right clients then you have massively increased chance of success.
Hi Michael. I didn’t know you had such an illustrious career, in addition to teaching me how to make the best bacon sandwich on the planet ๐
I especially liked your idea to organize your prospects. That’s been a struggle for me, because I was always writing things on Post-its that got stuck to something else and walked away. The course I’m working on suggested writing them down in a notebook, but I think I’m going to do an index card file.
I appreciate the input.
All the best,
Leslie
Haha thanks Leslie, bacon and business…sounds like a great early morning meeting! ๐ It is advisable to have a good planning and scheduling system in place, time management is an important part of keeping on top of your business.
Very well said, michael! These are really great tips to consider in regards to improving your business. To always have these kind of advice is breather and have a clearer business mindset!
I really like your tips. I think its important to put yourself in your customers shoes like you mentioned. You really have to know and understand your target market to do this. When you can master that you can really master what your business wants.
Thanks Johnny! And Welcome to The Soul Agent Blog!
Great post i love this site. Thanks to you.And Journeys begin with a planned destination, so should your business have a place to go if itโs going to go places.
Entrepreneurs are kind of successful people in this contemporary world. And yes the mindset defines a clear picture of the segment to be considered of. Certain habits are also there which hampers the success factors in the long run process. To me mindset is everything for an entrepreneur. With the right mindset you save time and of course create more value.
Hi Jaret – thanks for taking the time to comment and I agree mindset is important – though may be not everything…energy is also important, don’t you think? ๐
A good business strategy is always important to know the possibilities of rewards and success on the venture.
I liked that you pointed out that it would be smart to make a plan on how it improves your business. It might be smart to talk to a consultant. They might be able to tell you how to train your employees better.
